Neurosurgery Information

A Neurosurgery Website......
Peripheral Nerve
Functional
Paediatric Neurosurgery

Welcome to Neuro-Surg.com! This website primarily serves to provide useful and concise information on common neurosurgical conditions. It aims to educate, enlighten and guide patients and their family members through difficult times. It is my sincere hope that many of their cares and concerns can be addressed succinctly. While the target audience would be Singaporeans, I do hope that many others from all parts of the world can benefit from Neuro-Surg.com.

The focus is therefore to help visitors understand neurosurgery clearly and simply. Every effort will be made to answer the many questions that face patients daily; including what a neurosurgeon actually does to common problems like head injury and neurocritical care. Cerebral aneurysms and vascular malformations that are potentially devastating will be covered in some detail. Of course, the relatively less frequent neurosurgical problems like skull base tumours, peripheral nerve lesions and functional disorders will not be forgotten. Degenerative conditions like spinal stenosis and prolapsed intervertebral discs are discussed as well.

The Navigation bar on the left is organised according to the various subspecialities in neurosurgery. Clicking on one of them brings you to the common conditions in that particular subspeciality. There is also a neuroantomy section for those who may be interested. As this website can never be exhaustive, a links page is included to point you to relevant sites that can be helpful.

Cerebral aneurysms What is neurosurgery?
Find a Neurosurgeon
Find out more about brain aneurysms! Neurosurgery involves the management and treatment of conditions involving the brain, spinal cord, spinal column ('back bone'), peripheral nerves (nerves that supply the arms and legs) and even the autonomic nervous system(eg, involuntary nerves responsible for sweating). While neurosurgeons are brain surgeons, their work actually includes many conditions 'outside' of the brain, making their field of work diverse, challenging and rewarding. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons has a good definition.

To be a fully qualified neurosurgeon in Singapore, one has to be registered with the Specialist Accreditation Board. After 3 years of basic surgical training (BST), a trainee enters advanced specialist training (AST) for 4-5 years. Training is gruelling to say the least. Advanced specialist training in
Singapore is administered by the Joint Committee on Specialist Training (JCST). The JCST is appointed by the Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) to set the professional standards for specialist training and establish the framework for assuring the quality of specialist training in Singapore. The JCST also oversees the accreditation of training departments and institutions. The JCST Secretariat is serviced jointly by the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS), National University of Singapore. The Specialist Training Committees (STCs) for the 35 specialties report to the JCST. They are responsible for conducting specialist exit assessments and examinations.

Neurosurgical training in Singapore is closely linked to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeon's programme and the Inter-collegiate Advanced Speciality Programme for Neurosurgery in the United Kingdom.

Hydrocephalus What is modern microneurosurgery?
Tell me about it.... Neurosurgeons often operate with the aid of a microscope in both brain and spinal procedures. Giving both a greater magnification and brighter illumination of the operative field, vital structures can be visualised clearly. It is often used with neuronavigation devices which allows safe and more accurate surgery to be performed. Sometimes, a neuroendoscope is employed to offer additional views. With modern microneurosurgical techniques and instruments, surgical morbidity has improved tremendously over the last 2 decades.
